He walked quickly across the dusty road in Mecca. He needed to reach the Galilee Center for
the weekly bag of groceries he and others would receive that day. He would not give his name,
only to say he was nicknamed "baby Jose". His dark skinned face was a bit wrinkled so it was
hard to tell his age. He was 40. He was a farmworker, working in farm land not far from
the tiny downtown Mecca where the Galilee Center is located.
"Jose" said he frequented the Migrant Worker Comfort Center at Galilee, sneaking in to wash his
clothes for free once a week.
He had to rush across the street, and he had to sneak in the Galilee Center for a good reason.
A close look across the rail road tracks running through Mecca showed a hidden border patrol
"I have not ever done anything crime", he said in broken English. "I need work. My family. My
family need me to work". It is hard to come out and walk around, he explained. "We hidden",
he said. He added that he and his family rush out to work and rush home everyday. He covered
his eyes somewhat, rubbing them, and worry swept across his face.
THE KOCH BROTHERS HELD A RETREAT IN INDIAN WELLS THIS PAST WEEKEND AND
FOLKS HAD TO PAY $100,000 TO ATTEND. OVER 500 REPUBLICANS PAID THAT AMOUNT
TO PLAN HOW THEY WILL BUY ELECTIONS THIS FALL, AND HOW THEY WILL STRATEGIZE
TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICY ON EVERYTHING FROM CHARTER SCHOOLS, TO
FIGHTING SMART GUN LAWS, TO, YES, AN IMMIGRATION POLICY THAT IS MEAN SPIRITED,
UNWISE, AND ... VERY, VERY CRUEL.
