Democrats of the Desert Tour the Galilee Comfort Station in Mecca

On June 7th a group of DOD members and friends traveled to the Galilee Comfort Station in Mecca to tour the facilities and to learn more about how the station provides farm, migrant workers and their families with basic needs. The facility offers showers and restrooms for men, women, and a private family restroom. In addition there is a laundry facility, a reception and community waiting room. The facility addresses the needs of the farm workers in the Mecca, Thermal, Oasis and North Shore Communities. The

farm workers are able to take a shower, wash their clothing in a clean and healthy environment inside a facility with air conditioning and heating. Toiletries are free of charge to clients. Comfort station Hours are:

Monday-Friday 1pm-7pm

Saturday &Sunday 12pm-6pm

DOD members learned this is the only 'Comfort Station" in California. Gloria Gomez spoke to the group about the need for this center and she said that the team was there to serve the people of Mecca and the Coachella Valley, especially the farm workers. She shared with us they believe the facility provides the workers a place where, as human beings, they can feel dignity, respect and love.

There is a store where they can buy items from furniture, books, clothing, shoes and many other necessities for a very minimal cost. DOD members brought many needed items for the center. For workers who travel from location to location during the farming season this comfort station is just that. Can you imagine working in the fields all day with no where to go for your basic needs? In the hot summer temperatures, we were reminded that many workers come in to the shelter for the services provided, only to return outside to sleep the night. Living wages, respect and comfort are what human beings deserve. DOD President Robert Westwood reminded us this is what democrats work for everyday.

The DOD is committed to further aid and work closely with the Galilee Comfort Center in the coming future. We ask those of you who could not attend to consider a donation by check or take a ride to Mecca someday and see for yourself the realities of our fellow human beings. Also we are asking for "backpacks for kids" to be donated at our June 24th DOD meeting.

Save the date on your Calendar for March 3rd when there will be a yearly Fundraising Gala for the Mecca Center.

The Desert Sun News sent a reporter ... so keep your eyes out for the story. Joy Silver the new candidate running for Senate Seat District 28, in 2018 was in attendance.
