Dear Friends and Family,

From being ready for a pandemic to creating a just society, a good public education system is a key ingredient for building a better future.  One of the many reasons I SUPPORT JOE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT is that he has a robust plan for education that addresses many of the big problems we confront right now.  How different this vision than the ugly bullying we’re hearing from Trump and company.

Here are a few highlights.

  • Make sure the existing Public Service Loan forgiveness program is fixed, simplified, and actually helps teachers.

  • Defeat the NRA .  Arming teachers isn’t the answer: instead, we need rational gun laws.  He will start with legislation (like he authored in 1994) to ban assault rifles and high capacity magazines.   In the months ahead, he will release additional proposals to address the gun violence epidemic in our country.

  • Invest in our schools to eliminate the funding gap between white and non-white districts and rich and poor districts.  Right now there’s an estimated $23 billion annual funding gap.

  • Make sure teachers receive a competitive wage and benefits. Teachers’ average weekly wages have not increased since 1996!

  • Double the number of psychologists, guidance counselors, nurses, social workers, and other health professionals in our schools.  One in five children in the U.S. experience mental health problems, but many are getting little or no help.

  • Create more opportunities for high school students to take practical classes that lead to credentials and successful careers.

  • High quality universal pre-kindergarten for all three and four- year -olds and provide early childhood development support to families.

  • Improve teacher diversity and reinstate diversity efforts in schools.

  • Schools rated a D+ from the American Society of Civil Engineers.  The U.S. underfund school infrastructure by $46 billion.  This must be reversed for our students and educators.

Though these are simple bullet points, I hope they demonstrate how thorough and thoughtful this education vision is. Please forward this to your own friends and family if you agree about the importance of these issues and the November Presidential Election.

Democratically yours,

Pris  Richardson
