StartFragment Nearly 250 people packed the clubhouse at Date Palm Country Club in Cathedral City Saturday to hear an ACLU attorney claim that America's liberties and freedoms are "under attack" within days of Donald Trump becoming President. James Gilliam, deputy director of the Southern California chapter of the ACLU, pledged that over 300 attorneys from the nation's largest civil rights organization will fight for the rights of immigrants, disabled persons, the LGBT community, Planned Parenthood and womens' health care, and the Affordable Care Act among other civil rights fights. Please join us in welcoming James Gilliam the deputy executive director at the ACLU of Southern California. Since April 2010, he has overseen the day-to-day operations of the organization. Before joining ACLU SoCal, James was a litigation associate and pro bono coordinator at Paul Hastings. He led the team that worked pro bono with ACLU SoCal on the B-18 class action lawsuit challenging detention conditions for undocumented individuals held in Los Angeles. James is also an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School, where he teaches Law & Sexuality and other public interest lawyering courses. While the outcome was not what we all expected or wanted we can look to the successes we did have as a team of dedicated Democrats. You knocked on hundreds of doors. Democrats of the Desert officially welcomed their new affiliate and adopted Heritage Palms Country Club Democrats at the annual DOD Holiday Party 2016.
